Many incoming transfer students are required to go through the Summer Experimental and Foundation Studies (EFS) program, which offers three studios: Drawing, Design and Spatial Dynamics. Led by EFS faculty with wide-ranging backgrounds in art and design, courses are structured to encourage a creative process that is fundamental to all departments at RISD. You can find important dates related to Summer EFS here.
Summer EFS costs
Single Room: $2,050
Dining: $1,230 (unlimited Met access)
Additionally, the estimated cost of materials for the summer program is $500–800, depending on your assignments. Supplies are available at the risd:store, the risd:store 3D and at other art and hardware stores in the area.
Your enrollment deposit of $500 is applied as partial payment for summer tuition. The balance of charges for your summer enrollment will be billed during the course of the program.
Students are required to live on campus for the summer program. Students who are married, over 21 years of age by September 1, or who live with a parent or guardian within commuting distance of campus may request a waiver of this requirement (please contact Residence Life for details).
