Below you'll find daily schedules for the orientation programs that take place over the course of the summer, from Transfer Orientation (for the Summer EFS program) in June to New Student Orientation in early September. As a reminder, all incoming students (first-year, BRDD and transfer) must attend New Student Orientation. All incoming students should be prepared to present valid photo identification (license, passport, military ID etc.) at orientation check-ins.

Transfer Orientation for Summer EFS Day 1—Thursday arrow clothed


  • 9 am – 2 pm: Check-in and move-in (for students in RISD Housing)
    15 West
    You made it! Come to 15 Westminster to receive your keys and check-in information. (If you have a conflict with the scheduled check-in hours, you must contact the Residence Life team to make special arrangements.)
  • 11 am – 4 pm: Shopping shuttles
    15 West
    Shuttles will be available outside 15 Westminster to loop between campus and nearby Seekonk, MA for general shopping needs at Target, Wal-mart and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
  • 11:30 am – 1 pm: Lunch
    The Met
    Take a break during your move to enjoy lunch.
  • 5:30 – 7 pm: Welcome Dinner
    20 Washington Place Auditorium
    Enjoy dinner with new friends as you receive your first welcome from Maggie Balch, Dean of Student Affairs; Tony Johnson, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs; and your Orientation Leaders (OLs).
  • 7 – 7:30 pm: Residence hall floor meetings (required for students in RISD Housing)
    15 West
    Join your RAs for further information about on-campus living and your floor community.
  • 8 – 10 pm: Boardgame night
    Taproom (Memorial Hall, 4th floor)
    Make new friends and get to know the OLs.

Transfer Orientation for Summer EFS Day 2 — Friday arrow clothed

  • 7 – 9 am: Breakfast
    The Met
    Grab a bite to eat at The Met with your OLs and get ready for the day.
  • 9 – 9:30 am: Experimental and Foundation Studies Q&A
    Metcalf Auditorium (Chace Center)
    Join Shawn Greenlee, Associate Professor of Experimental and Foundation Studies, to learn more and ask questions about summer studies.
  • 10 – 11:30 am: Taking care of business/Museum tour
    Campus/RISD Museum
    Take care of last-minute errands before the start of class or take a tour of the RISD Museum with your OL. Tours will begin in the Chace Center lobby at 10 am, 10:30 am and 11 am.
  • 11:45 am – 12:45 pm: Lunch
    The Met
    Enjoy lunch with new friends and OLs.
  • 1 – 3:00 pm: Campus tours/Resource Fair
    Campus/20 Washington Place Auditorium
    Tour campus with your OLs and learn more about key offices, such as Financial Aid, Public Safety and the Center for Arts & Language at the RISD Resource Fair. Tours will begin at The Met.
  • 3:15 – 4:15 pm: Community standards at RISD
    Metcalf Auditorium (Chace Center)
    Learn how to stay safe and informed in the RISD and Providence community.
  • 5 – 6:30 pm: Dinner
    The Met
    Enjoy dinner with your future classmates.
  • 8 – 10 pm: Dave and Buster's social
    Dave and Buster's (Providence Place Mall)
    Enjoy some fun at Dave and Buster's at the Providence Place Mall. Gameplay included!

Transfer Orientation for Summer EFS Day 3 — Saturday arrow clothed

  • 7:30 – 9 am: Breakfast

    Your meal plans begin today (so you can swipe your ID for breakfast!).
  • 9 – 10 am: Intercultural Student Engagement at RISD
    Metcalf Auditorium (Chace Center)
    Learn how RISD fosters a campus culture of diversity and inclusion and hear more about the resources our campus has in place to support you being your authentic self. Session will be led by Ulli Ryder, Director of Intercultural Student Engagement.
  • 10 – 11 am: ITS/Technology at RISD
    Metcalf Auditorium (Chace Center)
    Learn about the RISD app, how to register for classes, and more during this interactive session led by OLs.
  • 11:30 am – 1 pm: Lunch
    The Met
    Enjoy lunch as you continue to connect with peers and OLs.
  • 1 – 5 pm: Free time/shopping shuttles/PVD tours
    Campus/15 West
    Take some time to hang out or get some last minute supplies. Shuttles will be availiable outside 15 Westminster to loop between campus and nearby Seekonk, MA for general shopping needs. OLs will be available to lead tours around Providence. Tours will leave from 15 West.
  • 5 – 6:30 pm: Dinner
    The Met
    This one's on your own (be sure to use a meal swipe!).
  • 8 – 10 pm: Rhode Island Pride Fest 2019
    15 West/Downtown Providence
    Join us in attending Rhode Island's 44th Annual LGBTQ Pride Celebration. Meet outside of 15 West to walk to the illuminated night parade.
